[01] Overview
A style built around black and white cinematography does not simply stop when a period ends. This part traces what carried over into colour filmmaking as neo-noir, then widens out: a short list of titles to actually watch, then the same mood and devices found in prose fiction, comics and games, and finally a working checklist for spotting the style in something new.
This part builds on the vocabulary from Style & Craft, particularly the lighting and narration chapters, but does not require having read every chapter there first.
[02] The Four Chapters
These four move from history to practical application. Reading in order works best if you are new to the subject.
-
From Classic Noir to Neo-Noir: What Actually Changed
Colour, setting, self-awareness and moral outcome: what shifted between the classic period and neo-noir.
-
Ten Essential Film Noir Titles to Start With
A short list spanning the classic period and neo-noir, each with its year and why it is usually cited.
-
Noir Beyond Cinema: Fiction, Comics and Games
The same visual and narrative devices at work in prose, panel art and interactive storytelling.
-
How to Spot Noir Influence in a Contemporary Film
A short checklist of the signals critics use to call a current release noir-influenced, and the reasoning behind each one.
[03] How to Read This Part
If you only have time for one chapter in this part, pick based on what you actually want.
- Want the history: read the neo-noir chapter first, then the checklist chapter.
- Want something to watch tonight: skip straight to the ten essential titles chapter.
- Interested in books, comics or games rather than film: the noir-beyond-cinema chapter stands entirely on its own.
On the titles chosen
The viewing list in chapter ten sticks to films widely classified as noir or neo-noir in film scholarship. It is a starting point, not a ranking, and it says so explicitly in the chapter.
